Annual Historic Appomattox Railroad Festival The Historic Appomattox Railroad Festival, now in its 34th year, is one of the largest and most popular festivals in Virginia. More people attend the festival than live in the entire county! Over 30,000 people attend this major attraction.

Appomattox Court House National Historical Park After four years of war and over 630,000 casualties Generals Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant met in the parlor of the McLean Home in the village of Appomattox Court House, Virginia and agreed to terms which would make reunification of the Nation possible. The Mclean home in Appomattox Court House, Virginia was used on April 9th 1865 for the surrender meeting between General Robert E. Lee, C.S.A. and Lt. General Ulysses S. Grant, U.S.A. The house was also used on April 10th for the Surrender Commissioners meeting, and as the Headquarters of Major General John Gibbon, U.S.A. The Battles of Appomattox Station and Appomattox Court House, Virginia on April 8th and 9th, 1865 forced the surrender of General Robert E. Lee and the once invincible Confederate Army of Northern Virginia.

Appomattox Historical Society - Appomattox, Virginia This is the official website of the Appomattox County Historical Society, a non profit volunteer organization dedicated to preservation of our unique place in American History. When Appomattox is mentioned, the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia by Gen. R. E. Lee to Gen. U. S. Grant springs to mind. This accident of history ensured that the name "Appomattox" would live forever in the minds of historians. Many people, the world over, are familiar with the Military History of the Surrender at Appomattox. Approximately 175,000 people visit the Appomattox Courthouse National Park each year to learn more about the place "Where Our Nation United."
